Sydney is home to an incredible cafe scene. Locals are always looking for the next best spot for coffee, and no one bats an eyelid at paying $30 for brunch. Avo toasts and flat whites are perhaps the closest thing Australia has to a national cuisine, so it goes without saying that you can find great brunches in many places. Here are our picks of the best cafes in Sydney!
1. The Grounds of Alexandria
The queen of Sydney’s brunch scene, The Grounds of Alexandria is a huge garden. Its sprawling grounds include a grand cafe and restaurant, coffee research and testing facilities, an organic garden and even a petting zoo! An urban sanctuary serving up fresh, wholesome food, the space is one of the most popular cafes amongst locals and a must-visit for travellers. You may have to put up with long wait times and lots of Instagrammers, but there’s no place in Sydney like it.
2. Celsius Coffee
If you haven’t been to Celsius Coffee for brunch, you’re missing out on the best views of Sydney Harbour. A cosy space perched on a ferry wharf, here you can get cold brews, hot chocolate, cold-pressed juices and beautifully plated brunch dishes. Make sure to try the IG-famous Celsius Peanut Butter Waffles! There are not a lot of seats and it gets crowded at peak hours, so try to avoid the morning rush if you want to score the window seats.
3. Social Hideout
Fondly known as one of Sydney’s most Instagrammable cafes, Social Hideout has flower walls, neon signs, a playful menu and ice cream in tiny gold bathtubs. If that sounds like your thing, then you’ll adore this place. With locations in Paramatta and Waterloo, the food is so pretty here you will struggle to cut into it. What’s more, with a dog menu, your furry four-legged friends can enjoy some yummy treats too while you eat.
4. Dead Ringer
Coffee is not the drink of choice here. This vibrant Surry Hills bar and restaurant has one of the best boozy brunches Sydney has to offer! Every Saturday and Sunday Dead Ringer serves a boozy bottomless brunch menu. Instead of typical brunch fare, you’ll find lunch items with nods to brunch elements such as omelettes, tarts, blood sausage and plenty of seafood. Don’t forget the bottomless mimosa spritzes!
5. Lankan Filling Station
Your breakfast at Lankan will not be your typical smashed avo and poached eggs. We’re talking weekend brunches of hot hoppers with an array of breakfast curries and sambols. Here, food is inspired by traditional Sri Lankan flavours seen through the eyes of Australia. Come also for egg rolls and roti toasties filled with bacon, onion, green chilli and green tomato!
Untied is a modern rooftop space in The Streets of Barangaroo inspired by the lush rainforests of North Queensland. This oasis is known for its fantastic food, fun cocktails, colorful furniture and holiday party vibes. Vegan or not – their Sunday Bottomless Brunch menu will please even your carnivorous mates. Enjoy a 3-course brunch menu and special cocktail and wine list – everything is 100% vegan!
For a different kind of wake-me-up, the hip-hop and jazz tunes at kurumac are sure to get you moving. The all-day meals are light and emulate the breakfast staples you’ll find in Japan. Expect dishes such as onigiri (rice balls), tempura with green tea soba noodles and thick toasts. For heartier dishes, go for their congee or rice bowls.
